A new planning application has been submitted for the derelict former Red Cow hotel.
Developer Market Homes Limited is now looking to turn the High Street property that’s been empty for 15 years and its associated buildings into 18 dwellings.
The company had previously been granted planning permission to turn the Grade Two listed building into 31 homes in December 2016.
The new application seeks to demolish part of the rear of the hotel including the tap bar.
A design and access statement submitted by Market Homes Limited says: “The proposal is to reuse the main front section of the building along with outbuildings. The new scheme removes the rear projections from the main building as these are beyond repair and dangerous.
“The new scheme reduces the number of dwellings from the original approval, but still provides one, two and three-bed dwellings of flats, townhouses and semi detached houses.
“The proposal should be seen as the best use of the site and we believe is sympathetic to its surrounding neighbourhood.”
The Red Cow is believed to have been built around 1800 but hasn’t been used for 15 years.
Despite several planning applications the site has fallen into disrepair.
The dilapidated state has been an issue for Donington residents for a number of years.
Concerns over its appearance, the safety of passers-by and the site being an attraction for anti-social behaviour have all been raised previously.
The most recent application enjoyed widespread support when granted.
District councillor Jane King, said: “I’m thrilled the new application has been submitted and I hope it comes to fruition. Hopefully the developers will take into consideration any issues which are brought forward from local residents and act accordingly.”
