Network Rail repairs to resolve ‘unacceptable’ delays in Spalding

Work to resolve one of two problems with rail technology in the Spalding area starts next week.

Network Rail apologised again as it said traffic delays caused by faults closing level crossings are “unacceptable”.

The latest incident was on Good Friday (March 25). Axle counters, which tell signallers where trains are on the network, failed at 10.58am. In Winsover Road it led to the barriers remaining down for about 90 minutes. The system was fully repaired at around 4pm.

Gary Walsh, area director for Network Rail, said: “The delays being caused by the technological failures at these level crossings are unacceptable.
“My team is working tirelessly with our suppliers to get them working reliably at all times as quickly as possible.
“There are two known issues. A programme of repairs starts next week to address one of them and we continue to work to find a long-term fix for the other as quickly as possible.”

Mr Walsh acknowledged people’s frustrations but urged them to resist the temptation to cross the lines unless the level crossing or a Network Rail attendant says it is safe to do so.
