Nene Valley Harriers finished a creditable fourth in round one of The East Anglia League at Colchester – despite fielding a massively depleted team.
Incredibly, the Harriers won all seven of the men’s shot put competitions in what was an unprecedented clean sweep.
Several of the Nene Valley throwers are coached by legendary shot putter and strong man Geoff Capes, who is based in Spalding.
Robbie Shaw won the senior men’s shot with a throw of 14.02m while club all-rounder Dave Bush won the B event.
Lincolnshire county champion Charles Hughes – who attends Spalding Grammar School – had the best throw of the under-17s, while Kai Morrison won both the B shot and discus.
Callum Robertson threw 11.91m to win the only under-15 shot event, and George Harrison won both the under-13 shot and javelin, with Adam Squires also successful in the B shot.
Although not as dominant as the men, the lady throwers performed very well too.
Shot put victories were clinched by under-17 Priscilla Dadziea and B string under-13 thrower Lucy Molyneaux.
Lydia Church also won the under-17 3kg hammer and Danielle Pusey was first in the under-13 javelin with a fine throw of 21.54m.
As so often in recent years, the Hughes siblings were in irresistible form.
In addition to Charles’ throwing feats, his sister Lilly won the senior 100m in a season’s best time of 12.4secs, while twin brother William – another Spalding Gramamr pupil – won the under-17 sprint double with clockings of 11.5secs in the 100m and 22.8secs in the 200m.
Other winners for Nene Valley were Abraham Jones in the under-17 400m and Emily Maltby, who won both the senior ladies’ 100m hurdles and the triple jump.
The under-15 girls enjoyed a good day in the middle distances.
Ella Robinson and Phoebe Home finished first in the A and B 800m, while Amber Park won the 1,500m in a very useful 5.05.5mins.
