Narrow loss for Spalding Town

Spalding Town remain three points above the Lincolnshire Premier League drop zone despite giving title chasing Scunthorpe Town a scare.

Jon Manton’s 72 went a long way to helping his side set 230/9 after Ollie Dring won the toss and elected to bat.

He enjoyed partnerships of 58 with Divyeash Vaseeharan (21), 53 with Josh Lawrence (21) and 39 with Barnaby Dring (29) before being third out with 140 on the board.

Spalding struggled to up the scoring rate with only Ethan Lawrence (31 not out) sticking around for any length of time.

Thomas Giles (4/54) and Henry Wilson (4/40) did most of the damage for Scunthorpe.

The third placed side’s openers Benjamin Conroy (18) and Daniel Crew (37) put on 56 to begin the chase to 231.

But Town’s overseas player Walter Kinlock ended both in a spell that threatened to turn the game Spalding’s way.

In the space of a few overs he claimed four wickets to reduce Scunthorpe to 72/4.

Kinlock eventually finished with 4/48 from his 10 overs but he was unable to oust number three Priyanshu Khanduri who hit 74 from just 69 balls.

When Barnaby Dring had him caught behind for (1/32) he’d added 94 with Dhruv Chaudhry (34) who anchored.
Matthew Key (1/52) trapped the latter lbw, but Karanjit Bansal (36 not out from 23) and Thomas Giles (15 not out from 10) blasted their side to a four wicket victory with more than five overs to spare.

There was a defeat too for Spalding Town 2nd XI in South Lincs and Border League Division Two as they lost by six wickets at home to Baston.

Town were bowled out for 107 in the 42nd over with opener Phil Lewis (26) and Holly Hammond-Lewis (25) the top scorers.

She then claimed 1/13 from six overs taking wickets alongside Lily Spridgen (1/12), Josh White (1/16) and James Frascella (1/23).

Baston though reached their target four down in the 30th over.
