Narrow defeat for Long Sutton Sunday as Edgeller is left stranded

A mixed Sutton Sunday side fell ten runs shy of what would have been an impressive victory against a strong Warboys side in Rutland League Division Three.

Bowling first, openers Jimmy Hook (2-41) and Paul Edgeller (2-33) were impressive first up, but it was spin duo Jake Burton (3-22) and Rob Simpson (2-53) who altered the innings dramatically. However, a strong lower middle order stand from Warboys’ major batsmen (moved down the order) propelled them towards a big total.

The returning openers Hook and Edgeller managed to restrict the away side to only 201, a score which could have been a lot better – but also a lot worse for both sides.
In reply, a commanding partnership from Simpson and Battle got Sutton off the a good start, but when Simpson (17), Ben Shore (0) and Battle (26) all fell, pressure started to build on stand-in skipper Edgeller and young gun Hook.
They battled well, moving the score onto 138 before Hook (14) was dismissed.
Edgeller continued to motor but was running out of partners as Ian Morris (7), Steven Milnes (4) and Craig Milnes (0) fell.

Burton (4) went shortly afterwards with the score within 20 of victory and despite the best efforts of Ajay Jina (1) and John Morris (1), Edgeller was left stranded on 78 not out with his side only ten runs short of a their target.
