Music cafe returns for Holbeach Christmas show

Holbeach Town Band will re-open its Music Cafe for a Christmas concert.

On Sunday, December 10, leader Mel Hopkin will strike up the band to fill Holbeach WI Hall with a selection of Christmas classics.

Music Cafe started in April 2015, said Mel, who celebrates his 20th year as band leader.

“We run the café two or three times a year. The band plays while band members’ family and friends make cakes,” said Mel.

“We have a table of cakes to sell and we have spare instruments available for our visitors to try,” he added.

Mel said he can play most brass band instruments but these days audiences are most likely to find him playing the tuba or euphonium.

This will be alongside the 36 members of the senior band, as well as a performance from the combined training band and learner group.

It wouldn’t be a Christmas concert without seasonal music, and Mel comes well prepared.

He said: “The music will be a mixture of Christmas songs and selections from our repertoire.

“We will perform our new piece for this year, Christmas Day, a selection of carols arranged by Gustav Holst. This is along with old favourites such as Swing into Christmas, The Magic of Christmas and Oompah Christmas, as well as many popular festive songs and carols,” he said.

The concert runs from 3pm to 5pm and takes place at the WI Hall, Park Road, Holbeach.

Entry is free and refreshments will be served, including tea and mince pies.
