Mum’s plea to cyclists after crash: ‘Please always wear a helmet’

The mother of an injured teenaged cyclist has pleaded with people riding bikes to always wear a helmet.

It comes after Jenny Neilson’s son Cameron (13) was in collision with a car in Moulton.
He was wearing a helmet and Jenny believes his injuries would have been more serious if that were not the case.

Cameron – a pupil at University Academy Holbeach – is a keen cyclist, covering about 100 miles per week.
Jenny and husband Victor, of Moulton Chapel, bought the £125 Kask helmet for his birthday in September 2014.
She said: “It might seem a lot of money but it has proved money well spent.”

And offering advice to other cyclists, she added: “Just please wear a helmet – they’re worth it.”

Police said the incident on December 21 happened in West Cobgate at about 10.30am.
A car is thought to have emerged from a side road and collided with Cameron’s £1,500 bike, which suffered severe damage.

The teenager, who suffered cuts and grazes, was later checked over at hospital.
Paramedics at the scene found a small indent in his helmet, thought to have occurred in the crash.

Jenny, who works in main reception at Johnson Community Hospital, said: “At the time, Cameron was cycling from home to have a coffee with me.
“He said he could see [the accident] happening. He braked as much as he could.”

Jenny gave thanks to a lorry driver and two ladies who stopped to help.
Victor – like Cameron, a former member of Spalding Cycling Club now riding for Fenland Clarion Cycling Club – biked to the scene after a call from one of the women.
The car driver is believed to have been a local woman.

A police spokesman said: “Injuries were minor but an RTC booklet was completed and submitted to collisions investigations.”
