MP’s call for cap on heating oil prices

South Holland MP Sir John Hayes has written to the Minister of State for Energy urging for a cap on oil for home heating

The cost of oil has seen huge increases in recent days since the United States of America and Israel attacked Iran.
Writing before PM Sir Keir Starmer announced a £53m support package, he said: “You’ll be aware that around 1.7 millions homes use heating oil as an energy source in the UK and in constituencies like mine both homes and businesses are highly dependent on heating oil for domestic heating.

“Many people are hit especially hard by sudden rises in prices, given around 40 per cent of heating oil used in the UK comes from the Middle East with the elderly and vulnerable especially affected.

Sir John says that he’s heard of suppliers who have ‘cancelled bookings only to rebook the same delivery at vastly inflated prices’.

He goes on to call for an investigation into the heating oil supply market and for a cap on oil heating prices.
