MP made patron of group for brain tumour sufferers

A group set up to help sufferers of brain tumours across Lincolnshire has received the backing of MP John Hayes.

Mr Hayes, MP for South Holland and the Deepings, has taken on the role of patron of the Lincolnshire Brain Tumour Support Group with the aim of promoting the vital work it does in helping sufferers deal with their condition.
Set up just three years ago, the group now has around 80 members across the county and Surfleet member Joanna Hillier says it is a “lifeline” for people who can feel isolated and alone after their terrifying diagnosis.
Joanna was diagnosed with a large brain tumour – the size of a small orange – in May 2011 and said one of the worst things was having her driving licence taken away for 12 months, leaving her a virtual prisoner in her own home.
The support group holds regular meetings and outings for members and provides transport to ensure everyone who wants to is able to attend.
Joanna (44), of Reservoir Road, who is now doing well and receiving annual scans to ensure her tumour has not returned, said: “When I was diagnosed, the NHS care I received was fantastic but what was lacking was the after care and support.
“If you wanted to be involved in a support group, the nearest was Sheffield, which just wasn’t possible.
“Our group is for people of all ages, whether their tumour is benign or malignant, and we always try to make sure our outings cater for all levels of mobility.
“It really is a valuable lifeline. The support group is like one big family – we all know what each other is going through and are able to offer support, comfort and reassurance.
“We are all like-minded people and there for each other at a time when your confidence may have been shattered by a brain tumour diagnosis.”
Mr Hayes said: “I was moved when I heard what Joanna had been through and although cancer deaths generally are falling and treatments are improving, the reverse seems to be true of brain tumours and we need to move this issue up the agenda by creating more awareness.
“That is why I was happy to agree to become the patron of the group – it plays such an important role.”
