Moulton Harrox are the ChromaSport Peterborough and District Premier Division champions for the third time in seven years.
Despite unusually having a player sent off when they scored (see page 36), Kev Nottingham and Paul Crowson’s charges earned a 1-1 draw at home to Whittlesey Athletic to seal the title with two games to spare.
The club held a minute’s silence in memory of joint manager Kev’s dad Pete and former custodians Graham Smith and Keith Motley ahead of that match after their passings the week before.
And Moulton honoured them in fine fashion, clinching the title.
“It was a bit emotional but we got the right result at the end,” said Crowson, who described the sending off as “stupidity”. “It wasn’t one of our best performances but we got the job done.
“We’re absolutely delighted.
“After winning two titles with the reserves in the last two years, it’s a third title in a row for Kev.
“I’d like to think Kev’s learned a bit from me and I’ve definitely learned from him.
“It’s not been easy because as soon as you talk to players they ask how much money we’re paying.
“We’ve never been a paying club. Players come here to win things.
“In the last few years Nigel Steadman has built the foundations and we’ve gone on and built on that.
“The players have been fantastic.”
Delighted chairman Stuart Manning added: “To win the league and reach a senior up final in Kev’s first season after stepping up from the reserves is fantastic.
“The youngsters that have made the step up also have been excellent.
“Keeper Jamie Robinson has been a great find at just 19-years-old and Tom Panton coming back has been like a new signing.
“We’ve progressed this season a lot quicker than we thought and everyone at the club is delighted.”
