Moulton defend low score for key victory

Moulton Harrox returned to winning ways and a 98-run win over Bourne Seconds saw them stay within nine points of the top of the South Lincs Border League Championship.

As a bonus, leaders Newborough’s eight-wicket demolition of third-placed Boston leaves Moulton 44 points clear.

Captain Matt Rose won the toss and put his side in to bat. They scored runs throughout the order but without anyone going on to make a big innings.

Lee Eyett top-scored with 31 and there were decent knocks from Rose (27), Flynn McMillan (24) and opener Jamie Juckes (22) before a late blast from Harry Lovell (26no) and Curtis Todd (25) saw them add 62 for the last wicket.

Bourne lost both openers to Uddyan Hansana (4-12) but recovered to reach 70/2 before captain Rose stepped in. His six overs yielded 3-10 and, coupled with 3-44 from Curtis Todd, it saw Bourne lose their last eight wickets for just 32 runs.

Moulton Seconds remain winless in Division One after suffering a three-wicket defeat at Billingborough.

After scoring just 63 in their innings, they did not go down without a fight, reducing their hosts to 24/5 with Anish Suwarneraj (3-20) despatching both openers for a combined total of just nine.

Shanaka Sumanapala (3-23) also joined the party but a tricky 21-run partnership for the sixth wicket swung the match in Billingborough’s direction.

There was still a sniff of victory at 45/7 but the eighth-wicket partnership withstood Moulton’s best efforts and they reached their target in the 21st over.

Moulton had also lost their first two wickets cheaply but recovered well with a 40-run stand between Charlie Poulter (21) and Cameron Fox (18) pushing them on to 42/2. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got with five of the remaining batsmen out for ducks under attack from Shane George (5-22) and Mikey Atkinson (4-34).
