A man found in possession of a craft knife in the early hours of the morning, used it for rewiring remote controlled model cars, a court has been told.
Elliott Michael Doherty-Hazel, 28, of Wildfowlers Way, Gedney Drove End admitted possession of the bladed article without a good reason, as well as possession of cannabis, when he appeared at Boston Magistrates Court.
Jim Clare, prosecuting, said police officers saw Doherty-Hazel in his car parked in a rural area in Marsh Lane, Gedney Drove End in the early hours of November 9 and detected a strong smell of cannabis in the car.
When they asked him about it, he produced a small metal tin containing cannabis, which he said he had bought for £5, as well as the craft knife, which he told them he used for trimming wires in remote control model cars.
Mitigating, Beris Brickles said Doherty-Hazel had been a remote control hobbyist for many years and had left the knife in the car by mistake.
He said the knife was known more properly as a decorator’s knife and was intended to trim wallpaper.
He said Doherty-Hazel was fully compliant with the police, who had allowed him to drive home from the scene.
“It was not a knife used to cause harm and he handed it to the police, but he shouldn’t have had it in the car,” said Mr Brickles.
Fining him £120, the magistrates said there had been ‘no intention to go out and use the knife and no one was threatened’.They fined him an additional £80 for possession of the cannabis and £117 in court costs and charges.
