Mixed fortunes for Spalding United and Holbeach United on Saturday

South Holland’s top two footballing sides endured mixed fortunes on Saturday.

Spalding United beat Carlton Town 5-3 in an Evo-Stik League First Division South thriller, while Holbeach United lost 4-1 at Walsall Wood in the FA Vase.

Starting with the Tulips, Jake Newman and Nathan Stainfield put them 2-0 up early on in Marcus Ebdon’s first game as permanent boss.

However, Carlton made it 2-2 before half time – and then went 3-2 ahead 13 minutes from time.

An amazing last ten minutes saw Spalding hit back, though, with Newman bagging two more to complete his hat-trick and Mitch Griffiths bagging a late penalty to round off the win.

Holbeach, meanwhile, won’t be going on another great FA Vase run.

They were soundly beaten at Walsall Wood, although they were level at one stage thanks to a Josh Ford goal.

All results will be posted online tomorrow.
