Matt’s African mission to help families in poverty

Saracen’s Head farmer Matt Naylor was part of a team effort to build 67 beehives in an African community.

The Bee Team project in the Nou Forest in Tanzania was supported by Farm Africa. The aim was to build, wax and deliver as many hives as possible in three days.

Matt was one of seven UK farming sector figures to take part, flying out on October 26 and returning on Monday.

He said on Thursday: “Today was insane from our early start to our late finish.

“It has been the most rewarding 24 hours I have had for years.”

Beekeeping helps forest families move out of poverty, one of the key causes of deforestation.

Farm Africa said: “While beekeeping is a traditional activity, introducing modern hives means that production can double in one year and the farmers get a better price at market.”
