Man jailed for suffocation and strangulation charges

A Spalding man has been jailed for nearly four years after being found guilty of intentional suffocation and strangulation.

Zbigniew Kaczmarek of Carrington Road in Spalding was today (Friday) sentenced by Judge James House KC at Lincoln Crown Court.

The 51-year-old committed the offences, which took place in the town last December, against a single victim.

He was jailed for three years and 10 months with time on remand deducted from his total. He was also handed a restraining order for 10 years and will be deported on his release from custody.

Kaczmaek, 51, was found guilty of three charges after a trial at Lincoln Crown Court earlier this month.

Jurors cleared Kaczmarek of two rape charges and were directed to find him not guilty of two further rape charges.

No evidence was also offered on an assault charge.

Kaczmaek, who had no previous convictions, had denied all the charges.

Chris Jeyes, defending Kaczmaek, said he had been in custody throughout the proceedings and was realistic about his fate.

The court heard Kaczmarek had been free of his alcohol problems since being in custody.

Detective constable Charlotte Howitt paid tribute to Kaczmarek’s victim for their bravery while warning other would-be perpetrators that similar behaviour would see them behind bars.

She said: “Kaczmarek’s behaviour was unacceptable and dehumanising, showing total disregard for the victim and their rights.

“This will not be tolerated in our county, and we will pursue all lines of enquiry available to us to bring people like Kaczmarek to justice.

“I hope that this sentence gives his victim some sense of closure and I’d like to pay tribute to their bravery in coming forward and helping us with our investigation.

“The result today is a culmination of the hard work and determination of many people. Without them, we wouldn’t be here.”
