Man denies charge relating to 10 million cigarettes in shipping container

A Spalding man will go on trial next year after he denied the fraudulent evasion of duty on over 10 million cigarettes.

Gediminas Paulauskas, 49, of Holbeach Road, Spalding, pleaded not guilty to the fraudulent evasion of duty on 10,133,400 cigarettes when he appeared at Lincoln Crown Court.

The charge follows a HM Revenue and Customs investigation into a large shipping container with over 10 million cigarettes which was found in the process of being unloaded in Spalding on August 1, 2023.

Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight adjourned the case for a trial beginning at Lincoln Crown Court on October 12, 2026.

The trial is expected to last up to two weeks.

A pre-trial hearing will also take place at Lincoln Crown Court on November 14 this year.

Mr Paulauskas was granted bail on a number of conditions.

He must surrender his passports, agree not to apply for any travel documentation, not to travel overseas and report to Spalding Police Station every week at a specified time.
