Long Sutton provide cup shock in treble bid

Long Sutton Athletic’s hopes of a treble continued on Saturday as they shocked higher league opposition Thorney to reach the PFA Cup quarter-finals.

Matty Oliver scored twice as the London Road outfit came from behind to beat Premier Division Thorney.

In an even game Thorney took the lead in the first minute.

Both sides created chances throughout the 90 minutes in an end-to-end encounter but Sutton had to wait until halfway through the second period to make the breakthrough when Oliver delivered a fine finish.

With only having one substitute to freshen things up against the opposition from a higher level, the odds were against Long Sutton to get the win.

But with five minutes to go Oliver was taken down in the box.

He then coolly waited for the keeper to dive and slotted the penalty down the middle to secure the victory.

It booked Long Sutton a date in the next round with another Premier League side awaiting and a further step up in quality as they take on title challengers Netherton.

Athletic themselves are chasing the Division One title and they are also in the semi-final of the Spalding Inter Services Cup this weekend when they host Tydd St Mary.
