Long Sutton Olympian Aaron Heading misses out on final despite brilliant showing in last rounds

Long Sutton Olympian Aaron Heading had a storming finish to the Men’s Trap qualification competition in Tokyo but he was unable to qualify for the final later today.

Heading, who is also a member of the Sutton Bridge Coastguard, finished 23rd out of 29 after two days of shooting with a final score of 119 at the Asaka shooting range.

Just five shooters qualified for the final, though Team GB will have hopes of landing a medal in the competition after Matt Coward-Holley was one of those.

He shot 123 to finish second in qualification on count back after two days of shooting.

The sport’s organising body British Shooting said Aaron was “happy” with his final total after a fine performance this morning on the second day of the competition.

They tweeted: “Aaron Heading shot 119, not missing any in his last two rounds on the second day… Unfortunately the exceptionally high scores throughout the Trap event meant Aaron didn’t make a final but he was happy with his final total.

“We’re so proud of all three of our Olympic Trap shooters and wish Matt all the luck in the world as he prepares for the final!”

Kirsty Hegarty failed to qualify for the women’s Trap final.
