Long Sutton have to pay for making visitors bat

Hopes of building on the previous week’s derby victory over Moulton Harrox Seconds for Long Sutton Seconds were crushed by Billingborough in Division One of the South Lincs Border League.

Batting first after being put in by the hosts, Billingborough romped to 310/8.

Opener Dylan Garfoot struck 92 before being bowled by Eranda Kumara but, with three more players reaching half-centuries, the seven home bowlers faced a thankless task.

Kumara ended with 2-43 and there were two wickets apiece for Steven Miles (2-40) and Rob Simpson (2-58).

Opener Luke Barnes led the home reply, finishing unbeaten on 50 but only Charith Harshana hung around for any decent period, scoring 37.

Opening bat Joseph Broomfield and Charlie Crisp were the only others to reach double figures, both scoring 11, as Sutton closed on 139/9 inside 30 overs with Rob Simpson not batting.

There was an even more convincing defeat for Spalding Seconds in Division Two, losing by 200 runs at home to Newborough Seconds.

The away side rattled up 297 and then bowled out Spalding for 97.

They were undone by the batting prowess of Xavier Wishart (100 ret) and Joe Mills (87no), although Aidan Wing did finish with three wickets to his name, taking 3-74 from his seven overs.

Leighton Graham (2-24) and Thomas Decamps (2-38) also enjoyed some success with the ball.

Andrew Sorrell (26) shared an opening stand of 41 with Connor McGinn (10) but no-one else could establish themselves with Sam Webster (17), Jack Sawyer (13), Josh Riley (10) and Decamps (10) reaching double figures but failing to push on as their team fell three short of 100.

The Long Sutton derby in the Mid-Norfolk Sunday League finished with a 79-run victory for the Colts against Mallards.

Jack Baker hit 18 fours on his way to 115, with Paul Edgeller (42) and Jimmy Harrison (34) helping push the score on to 262/9. Steven Milnes (3-21) was the pick of the Mallards bowlers.

In reply, Luke Barwick (52) and Eranda Munasinghege (29) put on 54 for the first wicket, with Jonah Speed chipping in 23 but they were all out for 183 in the 38th over.

The Colts used nine bowlers, with Archie Baker taking 3-38 and both Ellis Redden (2-28) and Zac Parker (2-29) taking two.

The Mallards are at Bircham on Sunday but the Colts have no game.

  • A representative of the 8:56 Foundation will be at Long Sutton first team’s home South Lincs Border League match against Newborough on Saturday. They will be selling green cricket socks ready for #wearitgreen weekend of June 7 and 8. All funds go to the charity, which aims to raise awareness, increase the profile of support and reduce the stigma associated with mental health. By using sport as an aid the charity wants to encourage men to talk and reduce the risk of loneliness and isolation.
