Local History Festival returns

After it proved a success last year Spalding and Long Sutton libraries are joining others across the county in hosting a second Local History Festival throughout the month of May.

There will be over 50 events running throughout the county.

  • First up at Spalding Library on Victoria Street on Thursday, May 7, is a talk remembering the 100th anniversary of the opening of RAF Sutton Bridge.
School of Aces will take place from 2pm to 3pm and will be delivered by local historian and author of the book with the same title, Alistair Goodrum.

It will detail the history of RAF Sutton Bridge and the training system it implemented to turn inexperienced fighter pilots into ‘Top Guns’. Book a spot by emailing [email protected]

  • From Saturday, May 9 to Saturday, May 16, the library will also be holding a Spalding Curiosities exhibition.

A spokesman for Spalding Library said: “Find out about the quirkier side of Spalding, from unusual stories to ghoulish tales, taken from the library’s local studies collection.”

  • Gosberton and District History Society will then be hosting its own exhibition from Tuesday, May 26, to Saturday, May 30.

Entitled ‘The History of Gosberton’ it will showcase photos and interesting snippets about the history of the village.

  • Between May 11 and 16, Long Sutton Library on Trafalgar Square, will be hosting a display of pictures and resources from around Long Sutton and the surrounding villages, including some from the library’s own collection.
  • A History of Shopping is the title of the talk by Tim Machin taking place at the library on Thursday, May 14 from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

A spokesman said: “How has history changed our shopping habits and our local shops? Shops around Sutton Bridge, past and present, will be discussed as part of this presentation.”

  • Mr Machin will be back at the library on Thursday, May 21, for a talk entitled the ‘History of Sutton Bridge in Colour’ that takes place from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

He has used AI to bring to life historical images of the town. To book either of these talks email [email protected]

Nicola Rogers, partnership manager at Lincolnshire Libraries said: “After the success of our first festival last year, we wanted to again mark Local and Community Month and celebrate our county’s rich heritage.
“We are delighted to be able to invite so many well-known speakers and groups into our libraries to share their knowledge and research as well as highlighting the fascinating local studies collections held in our libraries.”
