Lions set sights on eye care

A host of volunteers were in Spalding town centre last Saturday to promote sight awareness.

It was led by the Spalding Lions Club which was joined on the market by representatives from PHAB Spalding, Boston and Spalding Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Boston and South Holland Talking Newspaper.

The Lions members have collected over 100,000 pairs of glasses to to be given out where needed across the world.

Lions president Julie Grant said: “We were there to talk with people about the importance of eye health and eyesight loss.

“The other representatives were on hand to talk with shoppers and answer any questions they may have had for us.

“Many people were unaware that there was a talking newspaper available for those with sight issues or loss, so

Gill Waterland from the charity, was on hand to talk through how it works.”

Coun Jan Whitbourn, a supporter of our club for many years, and Coun Ingrid Sheard, were with us during the day, showing their support for our initiative and our club as a whole, and we are very grateful to them for giving up their time.

“We were also there to promote Spalding Lions Club, with leaflets available for anyone wishing to join us.

“We had a good day, with many conversations with shoppers in the Market Place.

“We would like to thank everyone for their support.”
