Lift for Holbeach Weight Training Club as it celebrates 50 years

A club pulled together recently to celebrate its half century.

Holbeach Weight Training Club recently held a fun day and display at its current Alison Avenue base.

The club has more than 200 members with more on the waiting list to join.

Past members include Holbeach shot putt legend Geoff Capes who regularly used to train with the club.

It was started by Trevor Edwards and John Watts following an idea for activities at a youth club.

After spells at The Chequers and at Holbeach Athletic Club, it moved into its current purpose built premises in 1976 where the birthday celebrations were held involving two cakes, a buffet and bar and various strength competitions.

The club’s David Wilson, said: “It was a nice atmosphere and a great opportunity for the members to socialise and chat to some of the older members there.”

Simon Taylor cuts one of the cakes.
