I write in support of pro-sustainable transport proposals in Spalding, as a worrying trend seems to be pushing these ideas away, instead of supporting them. Spalding, like everywhere else, has to future-proof the infrastructure and I hear, with disappointment, that the car-free zoning in Spalding was pushed back.
Come on Spalding, let’s be progressive. Road users include pedestrians, cyclists and then motor vehicles.
That order is important, if you drive a car, you drive a privilege and now not just an economic one – but one of carbon usage. Even if you have no interest in economical or environmental benefits, the benefits to health from cycling and walking could be no more evident than in the past 18 months.
We must make provisions for those that need to drive, as we have to make provisions for the 25 per cent of the population that can’t afford a car. 50 per cent of car journeys are less than two miles, 30 minutes walking/ten minutes cycling. How long does it take you to park in Spalding sometimes?
If only there were more cycling spaces outside every shop SHDC.
