LETTERS – Parking is already a nightmare

I refer to the new page of The Voice dated Thursday, July 16, headed “£4m bid to boost Holbeach centre”.

Has the person/persons who are suggesting no right turn for traffic leaving Church Street and Boston Road ever driven in Holbeach?

I own and regularly visit and park at a property in Church Street.

To return to my home at Fleet Road, would I be expected to leave Church Street via Station Road and Barrington Gate and then turn right at the junction of Barrington Gate and High Street?

Anyone who has to use Barrington Gate will know that it is impossible to pass oncoming traffic without one of the vehicles having to give way because of the on-road parking by people who use the road as a car park rather than the official car parks.

The junction from Barrington Gate to the High Street is a nightmare to get out of because of the volume of traffic on High Street.

Now, no right turn from Boston Road! People from the various estates off Spalding Road – many of whom shop at Tesco’s will no doubt return home via East Elloe Avenue (not a very wide road) and will then need to turn right onto Spalding Road opposite the entrance to Stukeley School.

SHDC wants to create a new hub in the Chequers Yard! How will this encourage people to visit the shops on the High Street?

How many of the 28 apartments in Chequers Yard will have off-road parking for the vehicles which no doubt some of them will have?

At present the Park Road car park is locked at night, therefore people coming home late at night or needing to go to work early in the morning will not have access to it.

On road parking, it is almost impossible to park in the Fishpond Lane car park because it is monopolised by people living nearby who have no off-road parking facilities.

As for the proposal for more cycle lanes – those already on Fleet Street and Fleet Road are regularly full of parked cars and vans, as I pointed out in a letter to the Highways Department in August 2017 (which I never had an acknowledgement of) and the situation is now worse.
