LETTERS – Flower Queen is open to all

While I totally understand some people’s views and comments regarding a male entering the Flower Queen competition, I have to say that I am disappointed in some.
Last year we called it an ‘Ambassador’ and some complained. So we go back to tradition, ‘Flower Queen’ as it has been since the 50s and some complain.
It is 2024 now and we have no legal right to stop any gender or gender neutral from entering the competition and whilst some may not agree, the competition is open to all.
Every contestant is equal and has equal chance of being selected, regardless of their status. It will be judged on the person best suited to represent our town.
I am considering my current dilemma whether to even bother next year or perhaps have a King and Queen.
I will open it to public vote at the end of the year and go with the majority, but, it will still remain correct and accept entrants of all genders.
I am genuinely sorry that I cannot please everyone but I am trying my hardest.
