LETTERS – Concerned over centre closure

An open letter to Sir John Hayes:

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing as a resident of South Holland. Through my recent work on local health and economic conditions, I have become deeply concerned about the imminent closure of Long Sutton Sports Centre. I ask for your urgent intervention to prevent the loss of this vital community asset.

Why the closure matters

Health impacts: Long Sutton and the wider South Holland district already record above‑average rates of childhood obesity and low physical activity, with very limited access to sports facilities. Losing the only public leisure centre will further restrict residents’ ability to exercise, undermining efforts to tackle obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Community cohesion: The centre hosts a wide range of clubs and classes, from table tennis groups to fitness sessions for older adults. These activities combat social isolation and support mental health. The sudden closure, with just 30 days’ notice, leaves users scrambling for alternatives that simply do not exist locally.

Economic fragility: The University Academy of Long Sutton says the centre’s rising energy bills exceed income.

This reflects a wider pattern of small organisations and enterprises struggling to absorb cost‑of‑living pressures.

South Holland’s economy is dominated by micro‑businesses; many cannot afford to pay Real Living Wage rates or maintain community facilities without support.

Levelling up and local resilience: South Holland needs investment in infrastructure and high‑quality jobs to diversify beyond the agri‑food sector. Removing one of the few publicly accessible recreational facilities runs counter to the Government’s levelling‑up agenda and risks worsening health inequalities.
What I am asking

Could you explore, with South Holland District Council and the Department for Levelling Up, the possibility of emergency funding or a sustainable business model to keep the centre open?

Might there be scope for a community asset transfer or partnership with local trusts to secure the facility’s future?

Would you be willing to raise this issue in Parliament to highlight the broader challenges facing rural leisure provision in our constituency?

Your long‑standing commitment to South Holland is greatly appreciated. I believe that with your support we can find a solution that preserves this facility and protects the health and wellbeing of our community.

Thank you for considering this request. I look forward to your response.
