The letter in the last issue from Sean Tranter about the dangerous crossroad of Clay Lake Bank and Mill Drove near Weston Hills raises an issue that has long needed to be said.
I have lived in Weston Hills for over 30 years and have seen endless accidents at this junction.
Traffic leaving the A16 at Cowbit and driving along Mill Drove North seems not to pay heed to the reduction in the capacity of the more minor nature of Mill Drove and speeds are frequently excessive along this stretch of road.
This, coupled with less than satisfactory visibility from Old Fendike Road and Clay Lake Bank at the crossroad, does not need a specialised traffic study to see that accidents are inevitable.
The Fens’ road system has many crossroads, and the combination of straight roads and crossroad junctions are commonplace.
The most dangerous of these have been adjusted to stagger the junction, but that need not be the solution to this particular instance.
There are hardly any houses along this stretch of Mill Drove; lorries have already been denied use of it, and it would be simple and not at all inconvenient to close it off to cars as well, and divert the rat run traffic along the A16.
