LETTERS – Aviary brings joy and peace

I am writing to you with reference to your article regarding the aviary in Ayscoughfee Gardens.
I am a support worker for a 25-year-old who is non-verbal autistic and epileptic.
Every other week we spend time in the gardens, visiting the cafe for our regular pot of tea and also walk along the aviary looking at the birds.
The joy and peace you see on this individual’s face is priceless. It really would be a great shame to see this iconic feature disappear.
Many a park throughout the country once had aviaries so it is most important that we keep this one. My only gripe is there is no signage to advertise that the gardens have such a lovely feature.
Most of the time I see the birds look healthy. OK, the caging could do with a spruce up.
Why don’t the council employ a designated gardening operative to keep the standards up? They seem to have plenty of money to waste as seen on some of the other products around town, the cycle stands that look like a car!
