LETTERS – Attempt to skew public opinion

I was dismayed to pick up this week’s paper and see on its covers a blatant publicity push from our elected representative in parliament.

One can’t help but wonder why, with an election supposedly four years away, there’s this clear attempt to skew public opinion in his favour, but that’s a wonder to ponder for another time.

Instead, let’s look at the situations that have been chosen to highlight how much he ‘cares’ for our community.

He “leads fight against massive solar project”, claiming that the farmland is more important… at a time when we need to improve our energy security, relying less on both foreign power and fossil fuels and are facing a continued cost of living crisis (which flared up under Truss, Conservative PM, don’t forget) with energy bills being one of the causes for concern.

Surely it makes more sense to patriotically lead the way and sacrifice a bit of farmland for the greater good of the constituency and the wider country?

Moving on, he opposes the prospect of an asphalt plant at Sutton Bridge.

Asphalt is used to help repair roads and pavements, something that we as a nation can seemingly all agree needs more attention from the government.

Rejecting proposals for the tools that will literally help to ease a problem we all face doesn’t seem very supportive of the community to me.

Flag flying! What a meaningless exercise! A nation is not defined by whether it waves a bit of coloured cloth around on a stick, or hangs it on a pole for the wind to flap for us; it’s defined by its actions, true patriotism (in case if you haven’t guessed how I feel yet) comes from working for the betterment of your nation, of its people, as a whole. Flag waving, instead of problem solving, is just another form of virtue signalling.

Politics isn’t about helping a handful of people who oppose something that will, objectively, help a greater number of people – it should be about supporting the majority, even if that means a relative handful will be marginally worse off for it.

Sometimes, the people who will be worse off are us, or other people we care about, but it is our patriotic duty to shoulder that cost, in order to do our part to improve this great nation.
