LETTER: Youths at fair keen to hear about dignataries

On Tuesday, October 6, I was invited by the Right Worshipful, the Mayor of Peterborough, Coun John Peach, to the traditional opening of the Bridge Fair followed by a sausage supper in aid of the Mayor’s charities. I was delighted to accept.

After being welcomed by the Mayor, we formed a huge procession of over 100 people which included mayors, chairmen, dignitaries, councillors and many cadets from the Navy, RAF and Army.

In a tradition dating back to 1878, we then marched from the town hall through the streets to the entrance of the fair on The Embankment. Here, we were met by the owner of the fair who welcomed the Mayor’s procession.  Coun Peach then opened the fair by reading the traditional proclamation.

We stayed at the fair for over an hour and it was funny to see mayors and chairmen returning to their youth and going on various rides such as the Waltzer and the Twister. It was a comical sight to see all that ermine going round and round and up and down.

In respect of my involvement, I’m sorry to say I did not partake in any rides but I spent my time talking to some local youths. They wanted to know who we were, why we were there and what do the chains mean. I like to think they are now aware what it was all about and how Mayor Peach helps the community by supporting local charities.

I hope the Mayor raised lots of money for his charities and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Coun Peach and the good people of Peterborough for their kindness and generosity shown to me.

Coun Rodney Grocock
Vice-chairman
South Holland District Council
