LETTER: Wheelie bins will be better

The recent coverage of the proposed introduction of a kerbside green waste collection scheme appears to be causing a few problems with people’s dislike of wheelie bins.

Having moved to Spalding from a town where wheelie bins were used, I found that even in the terraced housing areas, homeowners found a storage place for their bins so that they caused no problems, and we had two of them – green waste and black waste.

We are constantly being extolled to recycle and think green and, personally, I think that this scheme cannot begin soon enough as during the winter months the small recycling centre that we have in Spalding reduces its opening to four days (8am-4pm) Friday to Monday. I think that the people working there are doing their best but it took me 25 minutes to get rid of my garden waste on Monday afternoon. What it must be like at the weekend I dread to think, as I try to leave this time for the people who are at work during the week.

With more and more houses being built in the district, and an ageing population no longer wanting to drive, I think that this garden waste collection scheme is becoming a necessity, unless of course we can revert to the good old fashioned garden bonfire. Fun but not very safe or green.

Following your recent reports there are a couple of points I would like to bring up though: “the bins must be out by 6am”, this seems a bit early (has anyone told the collection team it’s an early start) and “that if left out after being emptied the council will repossess it”, please give people at work, time to get home at night, not everyone works locally.

As you can tell, I personally like wheelie bins as opposed to plastic bags etc but if people would rather have paper sacks then that alternative should be available as well, although I do wonder how strong they are, especially when wet.

One final thought, with the criticism of plastic bags by the EU – how long will it be before we have to have wheelie bins?
