LETTER: We are disgraceful people

It was refreshing to read the letter from Steven Joel who spoke out about the use of traps for the barbaric slaughtering of the poor mole and the way many people treat creatures in general, with little regard for their wellbeing – we really are disgraceful and utterly selfish people.

How can our children ever hope to grow up as loving and caring if they are taught that it is OK to kill because, in the opinion of some folk, there may be something that is not pleasing to the eye.

Someone is bound to reply with their defence for destroying the mole, but this is my opinion as someone who is a vegetarian and passionate about all life.

It is a shame that the authorities can’t use “traps” for all those individuals who make Spalding a real eyesore with their discarded rubbish, cigarette butts, spit and ramshackle homes owned by thoughtless investors who are only interested in getting maximum yield with minimum expenditure.

The effort to keep Spalding town centre fit for visitors is fine, but many other places in Spalding are unkempt and strewn with deliberately discarded rubbish – the river is a fine example of this behaviour.

Thank goodness I can enjoy looking at the riverbanks with its many molehills – I can imagine the moles getting on with their little lives and it really makes me smile.

It is a shame that, for a town of this size, a bit more effort can’t be put into making wildlife-friendly green spaces for all to enjoy, including Mr Mole.
