LETTER: Time for housing upgrade

As a former Cabinet member for Housing (now enjoying retirement) I was pleased to read your “Upgrade for all sheltered housing” article.
Whilst I was in post we began a fundamental review of all our sheltered housing stock, to consider all options including upgrading, modernising and making it more relevant to 21st century lifestyles and conditions.
This accommodation, comprising bungalows, flats and community centres is ageing, but needed technology upgrades so necessary for sheltered housing.
It is salutary to note that South Holland has retained its social housing stock, and that it intends to enhance the service it offers.
It is particularly pleasing, in response to the consultation, a handyman service and a small cohort of independent living officers.
These will be valuable additions to the sheltered housing residents.
Safety, security and affordability are the backbone of sheltered housing – and the addition of a trusted handyman service will surely be most welcome.
Thank you to all in the Housing Teams at South Holland District Council for their hard work in supporting this vital service.
