LETTER: This site is unsafe and unsuitable

In response to Councillor Angela Newton’s letter (Feb 12) regarding the new off-licence at 2 Bourne Road, I totally endorse and support everything she wrote.

I also lodged an objection to the application and attended the licensing hearing.

I walk past the premises twice a day and regularly use the Carrington Road and Hawthorn Bank junctions onto the A151.

I often witness speeding and bad parking. At times these junctions are very busy with vision often obstructed by parked vehicles.

This, together with the position of the zebra crossing between the two junctions, make I believe an unsafe and unsuitable site for a convenience store let alone an off-licence selling alcohol from 7am to 9pm seven days a week.

How on earth can people who are not familiar with the area, as two of the panel and the applicant’s solicitor were, decide that the issues raised are irrelevant and will have no impact on the locality?

I am astounded that the only restriction the police made was to have CCTV cameras installed and the Licensing Panel decided that limiting the hours to 7am-9pm and displaying notices to drivers to park safely and be aware of the pedestrian crossing was adequate!

The shop falls within the zigzag lines of the crossing.

Further to this, I and many others are dismayed to read of yet another licence application being submitted for Winsover Road again to open from 6am to midnight daily. This no doubt will be granted.

Just how many convenience/off licence shops does Spalding need?

The whole character of the once lovely town is being ruined. Enough is enough
