Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting many countries but nothing captures the mind more than Venice with its stunning architecture and, of course, the canals.
St Mark’s Square is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful squares in the world. As you window-shop, you will be amazed at the beautiful glass sculptures. I like glassware but, sadly, Murano glass is way out of my league and I dare not even enter the shops just in case I might bump into something!
There is a reason for my introductory piece revolving around Murano glass. On Sunday 4th October 2015 my wife, Christine, and I were invited by the Major of Louth, Coun Sue Locking and her consort, Coun Malcolm Locking, to a civic service to celebrate their year in office to be held at The Parish Church of James, Louth.
We were only too pleased to accept their kind invitation.
During the time I have been acting as vice-chairman for South Holland District Council, we have visited many beautiful churches and St James in Louth does not disappoint.
St James Church is notable for his tall spire which is awe-inspiring but the stained glass windows are truly breathtaking.
We arrived at The Wheatsheaf Public House in Louth at 9.45am and met up with many mayors and chairmen from councils far and wide. We were greeted by Coun Sue Locking and had coffee. We then mustered in the street outside the pub and formed a civic parade and marched to the church accompanied by music played by the Alton Brass Band.
The celebrations reflected a Lincolnshire Day theme with music, entertainment and local dialect pieces.
As soon as you enter the church there is light is everywhere, all radiating from the stained glass windows. It is a truly wonderful sight.
The service was conducted by Revd Brown and, on completion, we left the church and lined up in the street to take a salute where local groups were proudly displaying their ensigns.
We then returned to the church for light refreshments. This time I took the opportunity of taking a closer look at the windows. It doesn’t matter where you stand, there are large beautiful stained glass windows on every elevation.
After saying our goodbyes we made our way home.
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the Mayor of Louth, Coun Sue Locking, Coun Malcolm Locking and the good people of Louth for the kindness and generosity shown to my wife and I.
I would also like to offer my best wishes to them both and hope their time in office continues to be a memorable one.
Once again, many thanks.
