Letter: Please let us keep our bags

Coun Jack Tyrell’s quoted comments on the “bags or bins” survey published in The Voice of August 29 emphasised that other services might go short of cash if, when faced with a drawn survey result, the council opted to continue the bag collection despite it costing more than bins.
When supporting the publicly undefined cash savings bins are said to bring, surely open consideration should be given to how waste collection affects the less tangible aspects of life in our town.
Bags are visible for only part of a day then after the waste has gone without a trace until the eve of the next collection.
In contrast, bins would remain 24/7 after the waste had gone, two maybe three at each household, after the waste had gone.
Some householders have space to conceal them but many live in apartments and the terraced streets, often proudly holding our history on display in their bricks and mortar. These give the town much of its character.
Now add these bins in hundreds and thousands to the streetscape, many by necessity cluttering the pavement.
What an ugly, unsightly and dangerous nuisance to all pedestrians but especially pram pushers and those who use disability scooters.
And do those seeking to identify changes which will attract more money into our town really think that bin lined streets will help? Please let us keep our bags.
