LETTER: No need for another off-licence

We do not need another off licence in the town.

Do we assume that all these shops cannot do enough trade and make a living without having an off licence.

We live just off St John’s Road so we have garage at Little London that sells alcohol – cross the road from there we have the shop, again selling alcohol. Down Hawthorn Bank we have Balls who sell alcohol – across from there we have the pub on the corner and opposite, on Winsover Road, we a have the relatively new Fantasia selling alcohol.

I used to walk our dogs in a circle around this area about 6am each morning and many times have met men, usually foreign nationals, with a blue carrier bag full of cans of drink in one hand and a can in the other hand drinking out of that. Was rather an unnerving experience.

I think our planning/licensing department needs to think very carefully about this application as I understand that the existing shops this person runs has been raided by the police.

Is this the sort of person they need to give licence to or not?
