LETTER: Cyclists often their own worst enemy

In response to PEDALS chairman David Jones (February 2), I totally agree not all motorists obey the rules of the road either, but they do stick to the road.

As I have said before and will say again, for the amount of cyclists out there, a large number do not obey one single rule of the road. I encounter cyclists behaving badly every time I leave my home to walk the dogs or go to work. Ignoring traffic lights is the tip of the iceberg with them.

I start work at 6am and every morning you come across cyclists with no lights on their bikes, wearing dark clothing, no hi-vis vest, no reflectors etc. If that’s not enough, they then decide to cross the road in front of you without warning.

I am not making this up. I could go on and on about close calls with cyclists every day, and that’s just going to work. When out walking the dogs it’s equally as bad, as dogs react when startled.

You often get cyclists come racing past you at speed from behind. It’s not funny but I guess some of them think it is.

Cycling head on into oncoming traffic is another bad trait some of them have, cycling down one way streets the wrong way, you’re not expecting to encounter someone cycling towards you.

Many cyclists are their own worst enemy and shout and scream abuse when they feel their space is being invaded by drivers. It is inevitable in a collision who is going to come off worst, but every day they push their luck and opt to take on the driver with these ridiculous actions.

It’s pretty obvious to me that if they continue to ignore the rules of the road more and more cyclists are going to get seriously injured or killed. And the driver is going to be the one who has to live with what has happened, or be punished for something he or she was not responsible for.
