I have been recently reading about how nearly £1m from a “Spalding retail development” has basically been frittered away over the past 15 years that has come from the Springfields contribution pot.
To read that £211k has been spent on extra parking in the town centre astounded me the most, as I for the life of me cannot think where this extra space is!
To have £173k spent on the water taxi service is just ridiculous. I have never seen it at full use, and to be honest, it’s probably a waste of time using it.
I then read further down that £92k was spent on a Town Centre Manager for two years. I didn’t even know there was one during that time!
It does go to show how inept South Holland District Council is. They work with their blinkers on when its clearly obvious that Spalding town centre lacks character.
No-one is really interested in it and that’s why they go to Springfields or maybe Boston or Peterborough instead.
At least Roger Gambba-Jones admitted, and I quote “some of the investment we made wasn’t well-targeted, based on a degree of naivety on our part, having never seen something like this and having never attempted before to target it in the way we tried to.”
There are a clear lack of amenities for all ages, and maybe a new council should be formed that understands what is required to bring Spalding back to the 21st Century.
