LETTER: Cabinet hates Long Sutton

We are, frankly, amazed at the cabinet of South Holland re-confirming their decision to charge extra for stalls at Long Sutton market.
The decision from the Monitoring Panel to refer it back was unanimous – from both independent and conservative members.
Coun Nick Worth (chairman) stated it was “only £1.50” and traders ought to be able to afford it – but apparently not in his patch, Holbeach!
The portfolio holder said it was the council’s job to look after customers. Their job is to run markets for traders, who themselves look after customers.
He criticised us both for referring it back on “narrow grounds”, which suggests even he thinks the decisions are not correct.
Spalding works are done by our (i.e. district) staff. We have staff living in Long Sutton, but they have decided to employ an outside firm!
We both work together, and the closure was NOT requested by either the traders nor the town – but by the district.
Long Sutton is a successful small town of wide significance, and people from a number of neighbouring parishes in three counties use it and love it.
At least the decision confirms what was up until now only suspected – that the cabinet hate Long Sutton.
It is unfair and discriminatory. The whole subject needs to be reconsidered independently by someone with a basic knowledge of retail markets.
In Drove End there is a famous signpost, pointing to Long Sutton, Gedney, Holbeach and Amsterdam!
Are the cabinet suggesting, seriously, that to be treated fairly we have to approach the Dutch city?
