LETTER: Bannon rule would be disastrous

There was a big rally in London last Saturday (September 13), organised by the man known as Tommy Robinson, and with the backing of the American Steve Bannon.
Lots of Union Flags were flown, with a regrettable number of them upside down.
Steve Bannon, a wealthy man, was once a prominent member of Donald Trump’s circle, but Trump now disowns him.
He, Bannon, has been convicted of various offences in America, and in 2024 spent four months in jail for Contempt of Congress.
He came to be known in the UK around the time of the Brexit campaign.
He wasn’t directly part of that campaign, but was visiting people in several European countries, trying to sow the seeds of a movement to break up the European Union, presumably seeing that as in America’s interest.
When, by a narrow margin, this country voted to leave the Union, Bannon was reported to have showed his appreciation by making a substantial gift to Nigel Farage.
Now, having declared his intention to become “the infrastructure globally for the global populist movement”, he has supported populist political movements around the world, and has created a network of far-right groups in Europe.
Our present politics certainly need to be sharpened up, but those who have supported the London rally, risk exposing themselves to being ruled by the likes of Bannon.
That would be disastrous for this country, and is something that needs serious thinking about.
