Leading billiards pair suffer maiden Spalding League defeats

Two unbeaten records in Spalding and District Billiards League were shattered on Monday night.

Joint leaders Holbeach C and Donington both came a cropper, losing to Long Sutton and Pyramid B respectively.

Holbeach’s loss was the most eye-catching result of the week, with Sutton running riot in a 7-0 win.

Mick Cooper (O140) made a 48 break and Adam Barwell (O50) notched 36 and an unfinished 35 for Sutton, who are now top.

Donington, meanwhile, were handed a 5-2 home reverse by a Pyramid B side that now boast two wins from two.

Sid Shaw’s (O10) 39 break was in vain for the former leaders, with Maurice Phillipson (R80) and Darrell Read (R50) seeing the Bourne boys home.

Elsewhere, Holbeach B registered their first win of the season at the third time of asking – and how.

They piled on the misery for winless hosts Pyramid A with a rampant 7-0 triumph in Bourne.

Denis Hix (R70), Tony Blanchard (R60) and Nigel Ward (R100) all won well on the night.

Also on winning form were Gosberton A, who won 5-2 at Consti A.

Mick Johnson’s (O170) stellar breaks of 53 and 51 lit this clash up, but he was Consti’s only winner.

Norman Gookey’s (R80) 35 break inspired Gosberton.

Results: Pyramid A 0 Holbeach B 7 (491-600); Consti B 2 Gosberton A 5 (550-583); Long Sutton 7 Holbeach C 0 (600-513); Donington 2 Pyramid B 5 (491-533).

Fixtures (Monday): Crowland A v Sutton; Holbeach C v Pyramid A; Consti C v Donington; Gosberton A v Holbeach B; Holbeach A v Consti D; Pyramid B v Gosberton B.
