Late goal is cruel blow for Tigers

A late home goal condemned Holbeach United to a fifth straight defeat as they closed their Eastern Counties League Division One North campaign with a 2-1 reversal on the Essex coast at Holland.

A hard-working performance from the Tigers saw them push all the way and it looked as if they were going to make the long trip back home with a point to their name after matching their hosts throughout.

However, with just three minutes to go the home side struck to snatch victory.

Louie Garner had put the Knights ahead after 23 minutes but Reuben Cowler levelled five minutes later.

That was how it stayed until Charlie Howlett grabbed the 87th-minute winner.

Despite the loss, there were plenty of positives to take from a young Holbeach squad that continues to grow and gain valuable experience at this level.

The Tigers had suffered a pre-match blow with the loss of Callum Wright to injury. He was replaced by Harry Winks.

Tigers: Sellers, Bodibe, Grimwood, Akyüz, Goult, Williams, Lyall, Hyde, Wright, Garner, Kacirek. Subs: O’Sullivan, Klebahs, Winks.
