Lambs and micro pigs bring the cuteness factor to new Farm Yard

Cute and cuddly animals are always a firm favourite with children – and adults alike – but places to go to get up close to species such as pigs and sheep can be hard to come by in south Lincolnshire.

And that’s the gap that Spalding Farm Shop is hoping to fill with the latest addition to its shop and cafe.

The Farm Yard at the farm shop, in Scoldhall Lane, Surfleet – just 200 yards off the A16 from Spalding to Boston, is growing by the day and is sure to have everyone who visits cooing over its little creatures.

It has recently added two micro pigs, named Bubble and Squeak to its burgeoning collection – and at the moment the cute factor is at the next level with the recent birth of new lambs.

Some of the Farm Yard’s Jacobs ewes gave birth just last week.

Jamie Smith, from Spalding Farm Shop, said: “The lambs are already little characters in their own right and are a welcome addition to our collection.

“We chose to have Jacobs sheep at the Farm Yard as a personal choice as we like the colourings, their easy nature and their easy breeding.

“Many of our customers will have seen over the years my love for animals and will have witnessed my affection for the Wyandotte and Orpington chickens.

“At one stage we had more than 50 chickens and 40 chicks walking around the grounds.

“Now we have added the micro pigs, which we chose for their small size and very friendly nature.

“You may ask, why pigs? The reason is that pigs are very intelligent and easier than a dog to train.

“Also, to many people’s disbelief they are very clean animals and actually have no body scent at all.”

Spalding Farm Shop prides itself on its range of produce, much of which is grown on its own farm or sourced from a select group of farmers and growers who specialise in different crops throughout the season.

The shop also sources and sells a range of jams, chutneys and pickles, table sauces, pasta, homemade cakes and biscuits.

The farm shop also boasts the Manna coffee shop, offering all-day dining for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea and is fully licensed.
