Lack of wind makes for tricky day of sailing on the Welland

Three different sailors tasted glory as Welland Yacht Club held three races across two different series on Sunday.

In total contrast to the previous week, there was very little wind for the first race of the day – which was round four of the Sunday Points Series.

Again, several of the new juniors stayed to take part making for a 13-boat start.

Paul Burton took the early lead from Alan Cox, Lucy Burton, Brian Cobb, Mark Holland the pairing of Neal Tack and Rebecca Slator, Will Cook and Andy Prior with newcomers Christopher

Seaborn, Connor Clarke, Rosie, Freya and Samuel Willerton and Lucy Wilson making up the rest of the fleet.

Paul Burton still led after they rounded the top mark, with Martin Cook, Holland, Cox then Tack and Slator in hot pursuit.

On the run down to the club house Holland managed to move into second, but conscious of having then to try and break the handicap time difference back to Cook.

The positions at the front wouldn’t change during the second lap but, with each boat trying to maintain handicap distance to the boats ahead of them.

Once handicaps were applied it was Paul Burton who won from Holland, with Tack and Slator fourth.

The highest-placed new junior this week was Clarke.

The afternoon saw the start of a new series, with races one and two of the Personal Handicap.

Some of the juniors left after the morning race and the fleet joined by two more, making ten boats for the start of race one.

The promise of more wind for the afternoon wasn’t really forthcoming, with Paul Burton making the most of a slow start.

As the fleet started to space out the wind picked up slightly, giving hope for the final race.

Once personal handicaps were applied it was Holland who claimed the victory ahead of Lucy Burton and Martin Cook, who were tied for second ahead of Alan Cox in fourth place.

Most of the new juniors returned to the fleet to take part in the final race of the day. But, with the wind having died away again, some nine boats took to the starting line.

Once underway Cook turned back and sailed alongside the juniors, giving tips and encouragement throughout the first leg of the course.

The race had already been reduced to a single lap, but it was slow going.

Once the first three boats had made it over the line the decision was taken to tow the juniors back in.

This time it was Cox who claimed the victory, with Holland second and Tack claiming third.
