Ju-jitsu, piano playing and chicken farming

This week’s featured Pride of South Holland nominee is a proactive youngster who has been nominated in the Young Achiever award – Elsie Lewis-Smedley of Spalding High School.

The person who nominated Elsie for the Molsoms and Associates Opticians sponsored award, said: “Elsie is a determined and proactive student who manages to fit an inordinate number of activities into her very busy life. She is modest about her many achievements and quietly gets on with successfully juggling a large number of responsibilities and activities.

“If you didn’t know Elsie, you would never guess that she has played the piano for seven years, is committed to the school choir, is working towards her brown belt in ju-jitsu, has competed and medalled in international championships, and looks after 11 chickens in order to run her own egg business from home!

“Within school, Elsie has a strong sense of fairness and has represented her form as both our School Council Rep and Eco Rep, as well as organising a litter pick on our sponsored walk. She is a community-spirited student who is committed to the environment and also to improving the lives of others, such as when she organised a bake sale for Water Aid.

“Her recent school report contains glowing praise from all of her teachers: ‘Elsie is a positive and motivated student’; ‘Elsie is a reliable and diligent student who sets herself very high standards and always strives to achieve them. She has displayed a commendable resilience’; ‘Elsie is a talented student who explores complex ideas with creativity and skill.’

“Elsie is helpful, organised and independent and always strives to be the very best that she can be. I feel that she is an unsung hero because she is so modest and just quietly gets on with being brilliant, always unfazed by whatever life may throw at her.”
