It’s smart to recycle says green bag lottery winner

A delighted woman who won £1,000 in South Holland District Council’s Green Bag Lottery has urged others to get recycling.

Diane Smart, of Sutton St James, was “stunned” to win the top prize.

She said: “We don’t normally win things so when I found out I thought it was a joke!

“This has come as a very nice surprise and all because we’ve been doing our recycling properly, which is something I just get on with.

“Recycling isn’t hard to do and makes such a big difference so I would encourage anyone who doesn’t do it to get started.”

Mrs Smart’s win marks the end of the Green Bag Lottery, which was set up in February 2014 to promote good recycling and raise awareness of its importance.

Every four weeks, ten households were randomly and secretly selected to take part.

Each one that presented recycling correctly for at least three of the four weeks was awarded £100 and they were then placed into a draw to win the grand prize of £1,000.

Since the lottery launched there have been a total of 127 winners out of a possible 160 households chosen, showing that South Holland residents mean business when it comes to recycling.

Over £10,000 in prize money was handed out, which includes £100 prizes and £4,000 in grand prize draw money.
