Spalding’s mixed top club team are through to the last 16 of the country after a comfortable 16-0 points victory against Horncastle last Sunday at the Castle Sports Complex.
Spalding lost in the final last year and will be hoping to go one better this year.
Chelsea Tomlin recorded the first points for Spalding with a 23-9 win in the ladies’ singles against J Taplin, which was quickly followed by a 26-4 victory for Matt Whyers in the men’s singles against George Lancaster.
This left Spalding only needing one more rink win from the mixed pairs, triples and fours and with all rinks winning comfortably, the result was never in doubt.
Final scores: Ruby Hill & Martin Spencer 29-9 Keith Jackman; Jordan Philpott, Annie Dunham & Paul Simpson 27-12 Ted Tasker; Rebecca Simpson, Gloria Haney, Ash Caress & Graham Smith 39-8 John Scoley.
Overall shots score: Spalding 144 Horncastle 42.
Denny Cup: Spalding lost in the last 16 of the national club knockout competition, courtesy of a 73-82 defeat at the hands of Cumbria.
The match was played with two rinks at home and two away last Saturday. Cumbria started well and found themselves 21-14 up after five ends but Spalding fought back to take a 44-32 lead at the halfway stage.
It was Cumbria’s turn to fight back over the next five ends and were just two behind after fifteen.
The next few ends were nip and tuck on all rinks, with Cumbria taking a 71-68 shot lead with just three ends to play.
It was then that Cumbria stretched their lead and despite a late rally from Spalding, they recorded a nine shot victory.
Rink scores: Home: Jordan Philpott, Kevin Ekins, Ash Caress & Paul Simpson 25-18 Stephen Farish; Andy Dunham, Maurice Elding, Scott Dunham & Graham Smith 17-14 Gavin Taylor; Away: Rhys Hill, Martin Simpson, Simon Lilley & Martin Spencer 20-18 Stuart Airey; Ben Wilson, Matt Dawson, Andy Dawson & Matt Whyers 11-32 Trevor Taylor.
Friendly round-up: Spalding’s friendly bowlers continued their winning streak by gaining a comfortable victory over Fenland Bowlers, a match played on the neutral territory of Long Sutton Bowls Club.
The match was won by Spalding by 101 shots to 88 in a contest that was reasonably close throughout, with each team gaining three winning rinks.
The best of those winning rinks was skipped by James Newby, who was also captain of the day, who was very ably supported by Jean Collins and Danielle Wild.
