Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s talented under-25 double triples team were beaten by a strong York side at the end of last year.
Hoping to go one better than last season – where Spalding lost in the national final – they travelled to the neutral venue of Erewash (Nottinghamshire) for the clash.
However, Spalding came up against a very strong York side on the day and eventually lost 29-37.
Despite taking an early lead on both rinks, Nathan Puttrell, Rhys Hill and Stephen Harris lost 15-22, while Tja Spiller, making his debut in the team, Harry Mycock and Jordan Philpott lost 14-15.
- Spalding IBC’s over-60s team played their final game of 2019 at home against Horncastle.
Spalding started well and, by the half way mark, were leading on all five rinks.
This trend continued until the end with Spalding running out comfortable winners by 40 shots and 18-0 on points.
It was a little unfortunate for Horncastle as one of their players failed to show up but a quick look at the rule book saw the game played in a fair manner as befitting the sport.
The top winning rink was skipped by Dave Coleman, with Martin Stanley, Dave Amess and Ron Walpole, who won 26-6.
Captain for the day was Ken Challans who thanked all his team for the support in his first year in charge.
Rink Scores: Dave Coleman won 26-6; Maurice Elding won 21-18; Graham Wright won 24-14; Graham Hicks won 24-10; Chris Stagles won 21-20.
- Spalding IBC’s friendly section held their annual Christmas bowls game and party on December 21.
The day started at 1.30pm with a game of bowls and a number of players opting for fancy dress as befitted the occasion.
The game was played with nine ends and then a change of rinks to add to the enjoyment of playing different teams.
As much as everyone went out to win, the games were played in a fun environment with much laughter and enjoyment.
After the game, other members and friends joined in for an excellent Christmas dinner with all the trimmings courtesy of Smalldean Catering.
The caterers also came up with some surprise gifts on the tables, as did the captain Ken Challans.
The whole atmosphere was like a big family gathering, with everyone mucking in to help.
Following the meal, entertainment was provided by Phil Wigger, singing the songs of the era to suit those present with the audience joining in on many occasions.
A raffle followed with many prizes donated by those in attendance.
Overall it was a fun game of bowls aided by an excellent meal and good entertainment for all in attendance.
