Spalding Indoor Bowls Club talent Aaron Barnes has qualified for the final stages of the national under-18 singles event.
Having beaten brother and sister duo Danielle and Aaron Wild – both from his own club in previous rounds – Barnes played Kieran Chambers from Leicester IBC in the area final, played at Melton IBC.
There, Barnes won by a perfect two sets to nil to secure his place in the finals at Church Gresley IBC on March 18.
- Spalding IBC’s county mixed team lost at Stamford last week.
They only managed to win on one rink, which came from Freda Lyon, Tony Westland, Gill Needham and Graham Wright.
- Spalding IBC’s over-60 county league side lost their latest game of the season at Dunholme as they continue to battle for third place in the division.
The visitors started badly and found themselves 22 shots down after only four ends, winning on only one rink.
Spalding fought back and came within 11 shots of the aggregate with close games on four of the rinks.
However, Dunholme finished the stronger, leaving Spalding winning on only one rink (secured by the skip’s last bowl of the game) and losing the aggregate score by 35 shots.
The final result saw Spalding pick up just two points compared to Dunholme’s 16, after the hosts enjoyed an aggregate win of 119-84 shots – a complete reversal of the earlier fixture on our home soil.
The winning rink for Spalding was skipped by Peter Ridley, ably assisted by Chris Stagles, Paul Lockie and Eric Wakefield.
Captains for the day were David Lunn and Graham Hicks.
- Spalding IBC’s friendly bowlers enjoyed a 91-70 success over Skegness in a home clash on Sunday.
The best winning rink on this occasion was Dave Murray, Paul Lockie and skip Maggie Wheatley. Captain of the day was Ken Challans, assisted by Tony Westland.
